yoga: my journey
I have always moved and loved to move in my body. From a young age I was engaged in dancing, athletics, team sports, cartwheeling up and down the street, skateboarding down big hills, riding my bike, roller skating, backyard footy or cricket or pretty much any activity that had me outdoors or engaged in movement. My mother was also active and later in life taught yoga and karate. Yoga poses were a thing my mother, sister and I did when sitting in the lounge room together. I also spent countless moments lifting my siblings and other people's children on my feet as a way to play, engage and have fun. Movement was a crucial part of my mental and social wellbeing as I was a particularly sensitive individual as a child.
Yoga trickled into my 20s but I often did more physically intense cardio sports. I danced, a lot. Hours and hours I would spend on the dance floor to get my release. Yoga then made a big impact at age 29. I was at the tail end of an education degree, had entered a tricky relationship and was managing single parenthood with 2 young boys, uni and working full time. This combination led to a major depressive episode. I had pushed myself too far.
So I decided to take a couple of months off to heal. I explored a number of natural therapies and yoga was a key turning point. I stepped into a studio in West End and found a teacher I resonated with. Her philosophy and the yoga space she created gave me a platform to explore the sadness and all the tension inside. It also gave me tools to deal with the challenges I was facing. I was reminded how movement along with breath helped me to be more vibrant, present and most of all healthy.
From that moment forward, I started to practice yoga with more vigour. A year or two after my episode, I came across circus classes at Vulcana Women's Circus. It was like I found home. These movement practices changed my ability to understand and cope with anxiety and stress and felt like a general formula to live a more fulfilling life. Everything that felt impossible became possible with dedication and practice.
I began studying my yoga teacher training in 2011. I also took semi private sessions with a Sakshin Gatashta teacher, practising 2 hour sessions 2 - 3 times a week solidifying my practice and strengthening my body. These sessions overtime came to include AntiGravity Aerial Yoga which I also trained in the following year. I have gone on to train in various areas such as acroyoga, creative vinyasa, mindfulness, chakra focused sequencing, music, themes, mudras, yin yoga, anatomy, yogic studies, adjusting and more in Australia and around the world.
What inspires me the most is to be in tune with myself. Looking into my own habits, fears, tendencies, joys and weaving my life experiences into creating classes, music playlists and sequences that reflect that essence. I like to challenge what students know but also to support them on that journey by making the unaccessible accessible building their strength and neurological pathways to wired to a peak pose or giving a variety of variations to support where they are on the day.
I continue to train, study and to be curious. You never stop being a student.
I am currently teaching classes and workshops in Brisbane studios and offer private yoga sessions to clients. I also work as a facilitator on the Stretch Academy's Yoga Teacher Training 200 and 350hr courses.
